Calls for action as of March 26, 2017

So much to do, so little time! Rather than bombard our membership list with calls to action, we will gather action steps here.

1. Contact your Member of Congress to express concern about her intention to vote for the damaging repeal of ACA

Those of us who understand that the free market is inherently incapable of providing access to health care to most Americans are breathing a sigh of relief that the Republicans were unable to craft a replacement plan that satisfied the different wings of their party. It is recommended to contact our Member of Congress Representative Virginia Foxx to express our dismay that she indicated her willingness to support a bill that would have resulted in 24 million fewer people with health care, that would penalize the poor and benefit the rich,  that would have allowed insurance companies to penalize people for needing care, that would have resulted in even higher costs, and, thanks to a final round of changes, rolled back a number of protections that have been literally life-saving since the passage of the Affordable Care Act.

Representative Foxx recently responded to the letters provided to her at NAACP's Moral Resistance march by pointing to testimony from non-North Carolinians who are unhappy with the Affordable Care Act, and she adds that "I have heard from just a few who are satisfied" with the Affordable Care Act. Based on the number of people providing letters at just the Boone rally, as well as the numbers at the NC rallies bearing signs supporting the ACA, some of us may be curious as to how she defines "a few." It is also disappointing that most of the concerns about the ACA shared by the House Ways and Means committee would not be addressed by the proposed repeal but in many cases, worsened.

2. Learn more about Supreme Court Nominee Neil Gorsuch (pronounced Gore Such, not Gore Sich).

The national Indivisible organizers shared this website with information on nominee Gorsuch: http://www.afj.org/our-work/issues/supreme-court/nomination

The NPR Politics Podcast provided two illuminating podcasts on his hearings (including the correct pronunciation):https://www.npr.org/player/embed/520138364/521043778

https://www.npr.org/player/embed/520137864/520890359

One alarming item revealed in the NPR podcast is that Gorsuch approved of the idea that those who donate to political causes should be allowed to be anonymous. Given the active intervention in our election by the Russians, this stance would further undermine our ability to protect our democracy and national sovereignty.
