Reminders from the Steering Committee

The Steering Committee of the Blowing Rock PerSisters shared the following updates:

Several members of the Blowing Rock PerSisters attended the meeting with Jonathan Jordan about a proposed nonpartisan redistricting plan. The proposal will be introduced in the NCGA on 4/1 and they have 2 weeks to vote on it.  Although it isn’t perfect, the consensus was that it is better than what we currently have.  Watauga County will be divided into two districts. Go to youcanvote.org for more information.

Another member shared an update on our inquiries into treatment of immigrants in the High Country. Immigrants in our area are most at risk if they are stopped for any kind of traffic violation--or of course, any kind of crime.

Several members have benefitted from the Moveon.org's conference call/trainings. The next one will be on April 2. Find out more at https://act.moveon.org/survey/readytoresist8/

The steering committee agreed to organize a voter registration training session in May with a special consultant from Durham. In general, we need to push voter registration. There were some questions about the efficacy of walking neighborhoods in Blowing Rock--it was suggested we might canvas at public events. Our focus needs to be preparing for the mid-term elections.

Call to action: Call the three members of congress--US Representative Virginia Foxx, Senator Thom Tillis, and Senator Richard Burr to ask them to wait on confirming Gorsuch for Supreme Court until after hearings on the Russians' involvement in our election is completed.

Upcoming event: Watauga County Democratic Convention - Sat., April 8 12 - 2 pm / Pot Luck at noon; program at 1 p.m. / Speaker: Matt Wasson of Appalachian Voices.
